Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Physiatry is a term that I borrow from human medicine in an attempt to explain how I spend the majority of my professional life. I have worked in this field since soon after I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997.
In 1999 I opened PetPT in order to provide rehabilitation services for my post surgical patients. Back then, the field was in its infancy, but over the years there has been a significant increase in awareness and acceptance of the techniques and modalities used in veterinary physical medicine. As awareness grew, the field became more organized, and there is now an American professional organization of rehab vets, as well as a recognized college of specialists.
Over the years, rehab has moved from fringe status, at first classified as "alternative" or even dismissed outright, to a widely accepted and scientifically validated area of veterinary medicine that benefits and improves the quality of life of countless patients every day.
